Application Process/Requirements

Before you apply to become a volunteer, please familiarize yourself with the application process.
Volunteers are required:
  • ​To be at least 18 years of age. For ages 14-17, please visit our Summer Junior Volunteer Program.
  • To commit to at least three to six months of service. Some volunteer positions require additional time commitments and training. Your volunteer coordinator will have more information on these assignments.
  • As part of our application process, we require documentation of the following immunizations: (Note: Not required for virtual volunteers.)
    • ​Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) - Two doses or laboratory evidence of immunity are required.
    • Varicella (chicken pox)- Two doses, laboratory evidence of immunity, or medical diagnosis of varicella disease are required
    • Pertussis (Tdap) - One dose is required within the past 10 years.
    • A TB titer is required, and will be provided free of charge through Harris Health's Occupational Health Services.
    • Influenza - One dose is required annually September - March. Occupational Health Services provides flu shots free of charge during the flu season.
    • COVID-19 – Two doses of Pfizer or Moderna, one dose of Johnson & Johnson 
  • To pass a criminal background check conducted free of charge through Volunteer Services.
Application Process:
Step 1: Complete the appropriate application and submit to the Volunteer Services Department. Call the Volunteer office at 713-873-2227 with any questions or e-mail volunteer@harrishealth.org​
Step 2: After your application is submitted, we will run a background check. Once approved, you will be contacted to schedule a medical clearance appointment through one of our two Occupational Health Clinics. Your volunteer manager may also reach out at this time to conduct a short interview about your volunteer assignment preferences.
Step 3: Complete an online volunteer orientation to provide you with specific information about volunteering at Harris Health. You will be emailed instructions to complete this training after all of your clearances are complete.
Step 4: Finalize the details of your assignment and scheduling in an interview with your volunteer manager.
Step 5: Meet your volunteer manager to be issued a volunteer ID badge and receive a uniform (cost is $15 for a shirt or vest), before being placed in your volunteer assignment.
