HOUSTON (Aug. 26, 2021) — Harris Health System’s Ben Taub Hospital has received eight national recognitions for its treatment and care of heart attack, heart failure and stroke patients from the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association. Though best known for its trauma and emergency care, Ben Taub Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine have built a reputation of excellence in their care of brain and heart patients—particularly ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI).

As an accredited chest pain center, Ben Taub Hospital specializes in providing patients percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) as a primary treatment for acute heart attacks. The rapid administering of PCI helps patients minimize damage to the heart muscle.
Dr. Sandeep Markan, chief of staff, Ben Taub Hospital, and professor, Baylor College of Medicine, says providing the best possible outcomes for patients is what drives the cardiology team to serve at the highest level of clinical care offered to patients.

The Mission: Lifeline NSTEMI Gold recognition means the hospital has achieved at least two consecutive years with 65% or higher adherence to the dual antiplatelet therapy prescription at discharge and 75% or higher compliance on each of the other four quality measures.
Hospitals receiving Get With The Guidelines® Gold Plus Achievement Awards ensure heart failure patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines. Ben Taub Hospital reached the aggressive goal of treating patients with 85% or higher compliance to core standard levels of care as outlined by AHA for two consecutive calendar years.
Ben Taub Hospital is a Comprehensive Stroke Center certified by DNV Healthcare. As such, the hospital meets or exceeds quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients. These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for stroke patients. Before discharge, patients receive education on managing their health, get a scheduled follow-up visit, as well as other care transition interventions.
