Nursing School Partnerships

​​Harris Health’s Nursing Department educates and trains future nurses through partnerships with surrounding nursing schools. Nursing school students' clinical placements are managed through the Nursing Professional Development (NPD) Division in the Executive Nursing Practice Group (ENPG) Department in collaboration with the clinical leadership at Harris Health Ben Taub and Harris Health Lyndon B. Johnson hospitals, and various health centers and clinics within Ambulatory Care Services (ACS).

Nursing School Requirements
  • ​Fit tested before beginning clinical rotations
  • Current immunizations (flu, TB, hepatitis B, COVID-19, drug test)
  • Completion of background check and CPR certification
  • Current medical insurance and malpractice insurance
Clinical Placement Process
  1. Schools request student placements through the Centralized Clinical Placement System (CCPS).
  2. Students are placed in hospital units and clinics during the spring, summer and fall semesters. Requested clinical rotations are managed and approved based on unit, clinic and/or preceptor availability.
  3. NPD sends email approval or denial for placement requests.
  4. If approved for placement, schools complete and submit a student verification form (SVF).
    • ​​Forms must be submitted at least three weeks prior to the start date listed on SVF. Late forms are subject to delays in clinical start date. 
    • Incomplete forms will be sent back for completion and may delay processing.
    • Supervising faculty names must be included on every form or it will not be processed.​
  5. NPD will process the SVF.
    • ​Instructions for completing the online orientation and Harris Health identification numbers will be sent to the clinical coordinator.
  6. ​The clinical coordinator is responsible for forwarding the orientation instructions and identification numbers to the students.
  7. ​NPD provides an ID badge request form to the clinical coordinator once students are cleared to start their clinical rotation.
    • Students/faculty are required to take the completed form to the Security Office at any Harris Health location.
    • Students/faculty must wear their ID badge at all times.
​​Important Reminders
Harris Health does not provide parking for faculty or students. Parking is in the visitor parking areas and standard rates may apply. Students going to Ben Taub Hospital, should contact Texas Medical Center (TMC) parking to set up an account to receive a discount.​ Harris Health does not provide access to conference rooms due to limited availability. Please do not rearrange furniture at any Harris Health facility. Students are only allowed on the assigned unit on the approved clinical days. Extension of clinical dates must be approved through NPD and requires additional processing time.
